Stop Guessing What Your Guests Want: A/B Test Your Guest WiFi Splash Page
You probably designed your guest WiFi splash page once, got it live and moved on. Maybe the headline, image and offer reflect what your team liked best. But do you know whether guests agree?
When your page shapes who connects, what they see and whether they opt in, opinions are a costly way to make decisions. A/B testing lets you compare two versions with real guest behaviour, and improve the experience using evidence.
Test one change. Learn what works.
An A/B test shows two versions of a page to different guests at the same time. Version A is your current page; version B changes one thing. You then compare a clear outcome, such as the opt-in rate.
For example, keep the page layout, form and offer the same, but change the headline. If the versions differ in several ways, you may see which page performed better, but you won’t know what caused the difference.

Think of the test as a straightforward question: Does this specific change help more guests opt in?
Choose your measure before you launch. Clicks can show interest, but a click alone doesn’t tell you whether a guest completed the form or gave you a usable contact. For most venues, the more meaningful outcome is the opt-in rate, alongside the number of verified emails captured.
Test the changes most likely to matter
Start with changes guests will notice, and that can make a meaningful difference to the decision to connect.
- Headline or offer wording. Does “Connect to free WiFi” explain the benefit clearly? Would a specific offer give guests a stronger reason to opt in? Test different wording, but keep the offer itself consistent if you’re testing the headline.
- Hero image. Compare two relevant images. A product, dish or space your guests recognise may feel more compelling than a generic visual.
- Form length and field order. Test whether fewer fields make the journey easier, or whether placing email first improves completion. Keep the information you genuinely need, and any consent choices, clear.
- Incentive framing. Compare a free item, a percentage discount or a prize draw. Make the terms and the value of each offer understandable.
- CTA button copy. Try a clear action such as “Connect to WiFi” against wording that emphasises an offer. Change the button wording alone, not its colour and position at the same time.
- Where a game or AdCard appears. Test whether guests respond better to seeing it before or after joining the WiFi. Keep the rest of the journey steady.

A useful starting point is the headline or offer: these tell guests why they should continue. If you want to improve the page itself, review your guest WiFi splash pages and look for the single point where a clearer message or simpler step could help.
Give your test enough time
A test needs enough guest sessions to make its result useful. A venue with steady, high WiFi traffic may learn faster than a small café with fewer logins. There is no honest universal number of sessions that guarantees a winner: how much traffic you need depends on your usual opt-in rate and how large a change you’re trying to detect.
For a smaller venue, test bolder changes rather than tiny wording tweaks. Let the test run longer, or focus on one test a month instead of changing the page every week. If the result is unclear, call it inconclusive, not a win.
Keep the comparison fair by showing both versions during the same period where possible. A rainy Tuesday and a busy Saturday night can bring different guests and different reasons to connect. A seasonal promotion, holiday or local event can also skew what people respond to. Allow enough time to include the usual mix of days and trading conditions before deciding.

Avoid the traps that produce false confidence
Testing two things at once. If you change the headline and the offer together, you won’t know which change influenced the result. Keep each test focused.
Calling a winner after 40 logins. A handful of sessions can make random variation look like a clear result. Set a sensible duration or sample-size rule before you begin, and don’t stop just because one version looks ahead early.
Ignoring when the test ran. Different weekdays, weather, promotions and events can influence guest behaviour. Compare versions across similar conditions rather than treating every day as interchangeable.
Testing a page guests rarely see. Start with the splash page visitors actually encounter. A better result on a low-traffic page may have little impact on the outcome you care about.
Optimising clicks instead of contacts. More button taps don’t automatically mean more useful opt-ins. Track form completion and verified email capture as well as engagement.
Run your test with Fydelia
Fydelia’s A/B Testing feature compares splash page elements (including images, headlines and offers) in parallel, then identifies a winner using measured engagement and opt-ins. It’s one of 27 included features, alongside Unlimited Splash Pages, the WYSIWYG builder, Gamification and Email Capture.
The goal isn’t to turn your WiFi page into a complicated experiment. It’s to make one useful change, compare the result and act on what your guests show you. Fydelia’s Email Capture feature can auto-verify email addresses, helping you look beyond raw clicks to the contacts that can support future marketing.
A/B Testing also pairs with Gamification, AdCards, Email Verification and Automatic WiFi Login. You can explore whether an interactive reward encourages more opt-ins, whether an AdCard works better at another point in the journey, or whether a smoother return visit changes how guests engage. Test one variable at a time, and keep the opt-in and verified-contact outcome in view.
Lock in the winner. Then test again.
Once you have a clear winner, make it your new version A. Keep it live, then choose the next variable to test. That way, each experiment builds on what you’ve learned instead of restarting from guesswork.
Your splash page doesn’t need a redesign every week. It does need to keep earning its place as the first step in your guest WiFi experience, and the start of a valuable, consent-based customer relationship.
