iPhone QR scanning won’t redirect to captive portal

You may have noticed that iPhones do not close the camera when scanning an unsecure (open) network. Open networks are typical for external captive portal systems such as Fydelia.com, so this presents a bit of a problem!

Solution

We noticed that iPhones do redirect correctly for secure (WPA) network QR scans. So to get your Fydelia splash page correctly appearing on a QR code scan, follow these steps:

  1. Create a new SSID with the usual external captive portal settings, for redirecting guests to your Fydelia splash page
  2. Assign a WPA password to the SSID
  3. Make the network hidden, so that guests can still use the traditional method to access WiFi through your open SSID to Fydelia
  4. Use an online tool to create your QR code
    This tool is great: https://www.qrstuff.com/type/wifi
IMPORTANT: Enter the exact SSID and password, and mark it as hidden

Happy guests!

Now you can stick your QR code everywhere and your guests will be instantly navigated to your Fydelia splash page to log in to guest WiFi
